Bios on Released Lemurs: FIRST GROUP
Released 10 November 1997

Zuben'Ubi was born in 1985 at Duke University Primate Center. At Betampona he did well. He and Preasepe bred in the wild in 1998, but those infants did not survive more than a few weeks. Zuben'Ubi and Preasepe bred again in 1999 and raised triplets through weaning. At least one of these young ("Fara") survives. Zuben'Ubi survived for almost 3 years in the forest. He was killed by a fossa in October of 2000.

Praesepe, Zuben'Ubi's mate, was born at Duke University Primate Center in 1986. She also adapted well to life in the wild, but was killed by a fossa in July of 2000.

Laetitia was the first released lemur to be killed by a fossa. She was born at Duke University Primate Center in 1991 and lived only four months in the wild.

Janus was also born at Duke, in 1996. He survived in the wild for nine months and died of injuries from a fall.

Sarph is the surviving member of the first release group. He was born at Duke University Primate Center in 1993, and has so far lived over four years in the wild. At one point he had been missing for almost a year, with no signal from his radio collar, when he suddenly reappeared, accompanied by a wild female. He is completely integrated into a wild group - lately Sarph seems to be traveling with two females and a young male. We have preliminary evidence that Sarph has reproduced with a wild female, bringing the captive gene pool back to the wild.
