Bios on Released Lemurs: SECOND GROUP
Released 20 November 1998

Barney was born in 1991, and was living at Los Angeles Zoo before going to "bootcamp" at St. Catherines Wildlife Conservation Center and then on to Madagascar. Barney survived for two years in the forest before falling prey to a fossa in November 2000. Similar to other members of the second group, Barney never completely adapted to life in the wild. This group often appeared to be waitng for a zoo keeper to bring them food, rather than trying the local fruits.

Trisha was born in 1993 at St. Catherine's Wildlife Conservation Center. She disappeared after only three months in the wild and is presumed dead.

Jupiter and Dawn were born in 1991 and traveled from Hogle Zoo to Duke University Primate Center for bootcamp and then on to Madagascar. Jupiter survived for 18 months in the wild until she was killed by a fossa in June of 2000. When Barney was killed in November by a fossa, Dawn was left alone. Because she had not adapted well and because of fears the fossa would return, Dawn was recaptured and now lives at Parc Ivoloina.
