The
Village of Rendrirendry
The village of Rendrirendry (opinions differ if this word means
firefly or dragonfly) sits just outside the Betampona reserve and
serves as a base where all the project staff and their families
live. Before the MFG began Project Betampona, there was no village,
just two old houses and a dilapidated concrete "office."
There are now about a dozen small houses and and a working office
where botanical samples are stored and catalogued, data are entered
on a computer, equipment is kept, and meetings are held. The village
is now a vibrant place with two latrines, lots of flowers and grass,
and level tent sites for visitors.
In
January 2000, Rendrirendry was officially inaugurated as a Malagasy
village with a traditional "Joro" ceremony. Village
elders and authorities from the major villages around Betampona
were invited. Speeches, ceremonies and the sacrifice of a bull
marked the occasion which served two important purposes -- to
give the project personnel who live there official recognition
as village residents and also to reinforce relations with neighboring
villagers. Go back to Who's Who
