Volunteer Opportunities
There are currently no volunteer opportunities available through autumn 2008. Future volunteer opportunities will be posted when the current review process is completed by summer 2008. Although details for future programs are still being developed, some basic requirements to keep in mind for any future volunteer opportunities are below. Thank you!
Please note, this project has no openings for financed positions.
Essential requirements for the volunteering
* Ability to communicate clearly in both English and French, and to submit brief weekly handwritten reports.
* An up to date certificate and practical experience of Basic First-Aid.
* The ability to live and work for prolonged periods in remote field-conditions.
* Self-sufficiency.
* The ability to work as part of a mixed culture small team.
* The ability to work alone in remote areas.
* Sensitivity to the Malagasy culture.
* A desire to work with reptiles, mammals, amphibians and birds.
* A desire to work in forest habitat restoration.
* The ability to live and work in extreme conditions. Temperatures at Ivoloina can reach over 40°C, and levels of humidity are always very high.
* The candidate must be fit and healthy, without any serious physical or mental disabilities that would affect their safety and the safety of the team.
Character
Madagascar is a multicultural developing country. Candidates must be able to work happily under what may sometimes appear to be alien conditions to those who are used to working in the west. Patience is essential. Respect for Malagasy staff, villagers and locals is essential as any expatriate is here as a guest. The candidate must be easy going and have a good sense of humour.
Other desirable qualities for the position
* Previous experience working in developing countries.
* The ability to use a GPS.
* Spoken Malagasy.
* Current chainsaw certificate.
* Developed practical skills.
* Knowledge of and experience in horticultural techniques.
* Proficiency in camp-cooking.
Terms and conditions
* Very basic accommodation will be provided at Parc Ivoloina so long as the dates are arranged in advance. While there are no showers, there is a room where a shower bag can be used. There is no electricity or drinking water available, so you would need to bring a water filter with you. Basic provisions can be bought in a nearby village and arrangements can be made for trips into Tamatave by taxi (although often you have to walk 4km to find a taxi), or with zoo transport if it coincides with scheduled trips into town.
* MFG cannot offer any financial assistance, nor can we supply provisions, although we can assist in the logistics of the work.
* MFG cannot provide insurance for volunteers.
* Volunteers must provide all their own field equipment and supplies.
In exchange you will be able to experience rural Malagasy life in a beautiful setting, be able to work with and learn about some fascinating wildlife, have the opportunity to learn about the running of the zoo and the park (including free-entrance for the duration of the work period) and to contribute to the management objectives of the project.
