Learning about Lemurs & Conservation

Initiated in the early 1900s as a small research site, this area evolved into a small zoo in 1963, but was closed in 1986 following a devastating cyclone. At the request of the Malagasy government, the MFG assisted in reconstruction and Parc Zoologique d'Ivoloina (PZI) was inaugurated and re-opened in 1990. Today, PZI is a focus for regional conservation in the Tamatave Province.

The zoo is a resource for conservation education for schoolchildren, residents, and local teachers. The zoo has also become a popular destination for tourists visiting Tamatave.

In addition, the zoo provides training for Malagasy staff in animal husbandry and management. It provides homes for confiscated endangered species as well as provides fertile ground for a variety of research.
