Educating the Next Generation

Education is crucial to conservation. Early on an Environmental Education Center was constructed in Parc Ivoloina. And to further support area schools, the MFG started a "Saturday School" program in 1996. Children learn about nature as well as supplementary lessons such as French and math.

Passing rates on the exam to enter secondary school increased an extraordinary 1,460% for students attending the Saturday School. An extension was added to the Center in 2004 which doubled the space for students.

Building on this success at Parc Ivoloina, regular visits by an MFG educator were initiated in 2004 to remote villages around the Betampona Reserve. Plus, a second Saturday Class was started in Ambodiriana, a village near the Betampona Reserve. Help the MFG buy books for students!
