Effective Action Because of MFG
Before the MFG was formed, any zoo wanting to work in Madagascar entered into its own agreement with one or more segments of the government. The complexity of this process, the remoteness and expense of operating in Madagascar and the lack of continuity for long term projects made it a daunting prospect for most zoos. Further problems included lack of accountability for resources sent to Madagascar (equipment, funds, vehicles), rivalry among zoos and other organizations for influence on conservation sites or particular species, inefficient dispersal of resources, and uncertainty as to how to make a useful conservation impact.

By joining together under a common set of bylaws, MFG member zoos were able to gain substantial recognition and assistance from the Malagasy government. Members operate under a single accord which facilitates research programs and other permit issues. The MFG has established some collective clout, specifically through a long term commitment, continuity in programs and personnel, and an obvious shift from the old-fashioned animal collecting mentality.

Conservation needs in Madagascar are limitless, but the MFG is a relatively small, grassroots organization. We have been successful through a very focused and goal-oriented approach. The Group's work centers on areas in which members have expertise and programs which have been identified by the Malagasy government, the steering committee, and our advisors as having the potential for significant impact.
